Working closely with Scottish Enterprise, who contribute to the funding of many of our programmes, Jobcentre Plus and CareersScotland, we offer a extensive range of training programmes, designed to encourage excellence in the workplace. Led by our Training Manager and supported by a strong administrative team and a dedicated Development Advisor, JHP Edinburgh is confident we can find just the right course to suit any need.
Following their shortlisting announced in issue 53, staff at JHP Edinburgh are celebrating after winning the Best Individual Development award at learndirect's annual conference, Skills Across Scotland. The 5th annual conference was held at Hilton Hotel Glasgow and attended by more than 250 delegates from across learndirect scotland's national network of branded learning centres.
Speakers addressing the conference included Maureen Watt, Minister for Schools and Skills, Dr Peter Hughes, Chief Executive of Scottish Engineering, OBE and delegates also took part in breakout sessions on how the network of learning centres can improve upon their already impressive delivery. The sessions included staff development, learning partnerships, workplace literacies and 'Why We Need To Change' which encouraged delegates to see their organisation from a different perspective and how to develop the skills and attitudes necessary for change.
Many a true word is spoken in jest, as they say, and many a good idea is dreamt up by accident. So when one JHP learner casually suggested bringing her Mum along to the Centre, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that the idea blossomed into a full morning's activities.
The idea was this: IT skills have become essential in today's society, but one client group which on the whole has been slow to get typing and clicking is "Mums". So why not invite learners' Mums to JHP to experiment with some basic IT functions, like using the internet, databases and spreadsheets? The question was asked and the uptake was good, so one January morning JHP staff found they had a very different clientele to usual to contend with!
Half a day's IT tuition would never give anyone a PHD, so it was decided to ask all those present "What would you like to learn?" As virtually every Mum was interested in either sports, shopping, holidays, keeping in touch with family and friends or buying property abroad, all of which can be aided by computer knowledge, the lesson turned out to be very useful. A lively, noisy and interesting morning followed, where all of the guests enjoyed the Centre's facilities and learnt either some basic computer skills or found useful websites they didn't even know existed!
As there's no such thing as a free lunch, staff sent the Mums back to their families, churches and social clubs with a JHP pack detailing what the Centre can offer. All of the VIP guests left with a great introduction to using the computer, and promised to spread the word about JHP Training!
