Modern Apprenticeships Explained
Modern Apprenticeships are a highly effective form of vocational learning, designed to promote career excellence through a full and diverse programme of training. Over the years JHP Training has helped many thousands of people to achieve MAs, and they remain our principal area of training provision.
This section aims to outline the different emphases of the Modern Apprenticeship Framework's two main components: Scottish Vocational Qualifications and Core Skills, as well as answering frequently answered questions on course details and eligibility.
Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs)
The most practical component of the Modern Apprenticeship Framework is the SVQ, a nationally recognised qualification which assesses a candidate's knowledge of their employment area and experience in their role.
Through completing a series of mandatory and optional units, employees demonstrate their competencies in a number of different aspects of their job role, gaining confidence as they apply their growing expertise in real work situations.
SVQs are assessed in the workplace by qualified JHP Assessors, who make regular visits to monitor progress during the course of the programme - a high level of support and guidance which has been proven to increase employee motivation.
Core Skills
Core Skills qualifications are broader in scope than SVQs and Technical Certificates, and focus on transferable skills which employees use all the time, whatever their job role. Their aim is to build on aptitudes learnt in full-time education, which are essential in any work environment.
There are five Core Skills, common to all Modern Apprenticeships, which may be taken at different levels depending on the employment area:
- Communication
- Working with Others
- Problem Solving
- Numeracy
- Information Technology
Frequently Asked Questions - Modern Apprenticeships
Who is eligible to complete a Modern Apprenticeship?
Modern Apprenticeships are government funded programmes, aimed at addressing the skills needs of our economy by upskilling young adults. For this reason, the training can be delivered, often at no cost to you, for any employee between the ages of 16 and 19. If you have employees over the age of 19, please contact your local JHP Training Scotland Centre for information on alternative training that may be available.
How long do Modern Apprenticeships and SVQs take to complete?
There is no set time limit for the completion of a Modern Apprenticeship, however it is generally expected that a programme should take between one and two years, depending on the candidate's job role and the level and type of qualification being undertaken.
