Christine Maher
Generic Assessor and Equality & Diversity Officer

Time in current job: 8 months

Time employed at JHP Training:
Four years - I started as an Entry to Employment Tutor, after two years I was given a promotion as the Entry to Employment Co-ordinator for the Liverpool and Wirral centre. Promoted to my current role six months ago.

Are you office-based or do you work remotely?
Remote – I visit learners in their workplace to assess their progress towards their qualification.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
Interacting and supporting people of all abilities, offering them a chance to gain valuable life skills and education.

What personal qualities are required to perform this role well?
It is vital to be able to identify and solve problems, to make objective judgements and to be able to give and receive constructive criticism. You must be able to reflect on and evaluate your own work as well as be able to collaborate with others. You need to be self disciplined and highly organised and able to work to fixed time scales.

Can you recall your proudest moment at work?
After only being in my new role for 6 months I was the first Assessor for Liverpool and Manchester to be awarded Assessor of the month.

How do you see your future?
I am happy in my new role and haven’t looked back since.

A day in my life….
Before starting work, I study the gaps analysis for that day and make notes on what kind of evidence can be used for a learner’s qualification.
I make my visits supporting learners, dealing with any issues, whether to do with their qualification or sometimes work issues. I do my observation, guided discussion, etc, marking the gaps analysis as I go along.
After the assessment I take some time to make sure I haven’t missed anything out with regards to scoring. I give feedback to the learner and discuss what we can cover on my next visit and will inform the manager if present on the progress the learner is making.

Some days I attend equality and diversity meetings either in-house or run by the LSC. In this part of my role, I actively promote JHP’s commitment to equality and diversity to my learners and make sure that new starts have my details if there are any problems. I provide advice and support to staff on equality and diversity issues where appropriate, seeking advice and guidance from the Diversity Manager where required.

JHP Group actively promotes and supports equality of opportunity for all, regardless of ability, age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity or religious belief.
