Steve O’Hare
Bid Manager

Time employed at JHP training : 15 weeks

Are you office-based or do you work remotely?
Both – The Business Development Team have an office at our Coventry Headquarters, but I frequently attend networking events, briefing sessions, spend time with operational colleagues at the various business centres and meet with potential partner organisations.

What personal qualities does a Bid Manager require?
You need to be very organised and thrive on hard work, as there can be several projects to work on at any given time and you are continually working to produce quality work to short deadlines. The ability to network with a range of people is a must, in order to obtain the vital information required for tenders. It is also essential to fully understand and keep up to date with the changing employability and skills agendas and how JHP Group can respond to this fast pace of change.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
The ‘Buzz’ of winning really motivates me and I enjoy the variety of working across all parts of the business within the positive ‘can do culture’ of JHP Group.

Can you recall your proudest moment at work?
Winning circa £30 million of new business in 15 weeks with the company and being part of an increasingly successful team.

What do you consider to be valuable Rewards and Benefits of working for JHP Group?
Receiving praise for good performance makes me feel my hard work is valued and the pay and bonus structure also supports this culture of recognition for extra effort. Participating in team building activities is great on a personal level and for developing contacts within the company, too.

A day in my life….
There is no such thing as a typical day in Business Development, as we are involved in a diverse range of activities. A day at a Networking Event is spent gaining new information on potential tenders and updating my knowledge of current agendas and policies. I take full advantage of the chance to network with representatives from other providers, DWP/LSC and employers.

If successful, this should result in agreeing partnering or contracting/sub-contracting opportunities and arranging and attending follow up meetings. Throughout the day I am promoting JHP Group and gaining information on partner organisations. Ideally the next day will be spent in the office giving me time to reflect on new opportunities and identify the most suitable to tender for based on financial viability, fit with current business and company strategy.

How do you see your future?
Winning more business for JHP and breaking into new market places and countries.

JHP Group actively promotes and supports equality of opportunity for all, regardless of ability, age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity or religious belief.
