Sue Kirkpatrick
Training Manager

Time in current job: 3 years 6 months

Time employed at JHP training : 10 years 6 months

What personal qualities does a good Training Manager require?
The role requires excellent communication skills, a strong determination to achieve excellence within the Centre and a clear understanding of the problems which can face assessors on an almost daily basis.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy the variety.  I work with many assessors with different needs and abilities. I get a lot of satisfaction in my job from seeing the success of my assessors who in turn make the centre successful and contribute to the overall success of the company

How have you developed and grown in the role?
Over the years the company has changed and grown and I feel that I have moved forward and grown with the company. This has enabled my role to expand and made me more confident in myself.  I have attended many management courses which have helped develop me as an individual to the benefit of my staff and the company.

Can you recall your proudest moment at work?
Promotion to Training Manager is my proudest moment.  This confirmed that my hard work in the past had been recognised by my Manager. Another major success was when we became the first Centre in JHP to top 70% achievement rates. This was over 4 years ago when the industry average was around 45% and the Company average was about 62%. There have been many other proud moments not least of which is seeing new members of staff develop within their role to become very valued team members.

In what way does working for JHP Training help you maintain a good Work/Life Balance?
I can maintain a good work/life balance as the company always meets my needs on the odd occasions where I need some flexibility to manage home life incidents. I also find that by managing my time well I can have a work free weekend.

How do you see your future?
I hope to continue being a valuable member of the team in Carlisle and if opportunities arise within the Region which I feel I could be successful in then I will be interested in applying. All internal vacancies are circulated weekly so everyone is given the chance to progress.

A day in my life….
It is my responsibility to ensure the smooth running of all exams in centre and provide support to the Employability Team for registrations and certificates. I must deal with any related problems on campus as a priority on a daily basis. After this, I spend time responding to assessor and manager queries by email, telephone & face to face. I work between two offices, Carlisle & Whitehaven, to ensure that all assessors have access to me and that I am always available to give help and advice. I carry out case load reviews with all assessors on a monthly basis which are aimed at ensuring they produce at least 70% achievement rate, that the out of funding learners are kept to below 5% and that case loads are around 38/40. I also handle day to day queries on the envq database ranging from log-ins to clearing down the system and am responsible for providing statistical information to the Regional Manager and other regular reports.

JHP Group actively promotes and supports equality of opportunity for all, regardless of ability, age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity or religious belief.
